Mango harvest gets under way in east of Malaga province with a drop of 70 per cent forecast

The severe drought in Axarquia is severely impacting the mango harvest in Malaga province, with a forecasted 70% decrease, reducing the yield to just 12,000 tonnes. The drought and issues during crucial flowering periods have harmed mango production.

In response, the Spanish tropical fruit association (AET) has launched the 'Mango de Málaga' brand to promote and market the high-quality local mangoes. Despite the reduced supply, there's optimism for better prices and increased demand, especially in European markets.

The 'Mango de Málaga' brand, established in 2022, aims to enhance the fruit's market position by emphasizing its unique qualities and local production. Efforts are ongoing to obtain Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by 2025, which would formally recognize the mango's regional significance.

The AET is also seeking grants for research to address flowering issues and improve mango production. The brand’s continued success relies on promoting the mango's distinct attributes and minimal carbon footprint, appealing to consumers in both domestic and European markets.
