Climate change impacts on and response strategies for kiwifruit production: A comprehensive review

August 23, 2024 | Plants |

Researchers from Korea's Rural Development Administration and Jeju National University have conducted a study to investigate the effects of climate change on the cultivation of kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.). The review explores how rising global temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and an increased frequency of extreme weather events are affecting kiwifruit production. Key areas of focus include changes in phenology, physiological responses, and ecological interactions, as well as shifts in the geographic distribution of kiwifruit-growing regions.

The review highlights the negative effects of climate change on kiwifruit physiology, including increased vulnerability to pests and diseases. It also considers the broader economic and social consequences, such as reduced yields, disruptions to livelihoods, and market fluctuations. To address these challenges, the study suggests strategies like breeding climate-resilient kiwifruit cultivars, optimizing sustainable agricultural practices (e.g., irrigation, mulching, and shade management), and conserving soil and water resources.

By summarizing current research on climate adaptation in kiwifruit farming, the study offers practical recommendations for promoting sustainability and resilience in fruit production, with a particular focus on future research to support kiwifruit cultivation under changing climatic conditions.
