Vietnam approved to export passion fruit to Australia

September 11, 2024 | Vietnam Investment Review |

Vietnam has officially been approved to export passion fruit to Australia, following a ceremony held by Vietnam’s Plant Protection Department (PPD) and the Australian Embassy. This development strengthens agricultural trade between the two nations, which has nearly doubled in the past two years, reaching $43 billion. Passion fruit exports from Vietnam will need to meet strict biosecurity and pest-free requirements. Additionally, both countries are working to introduce Vietnamese pomelos and Australian blueberries to each other's markets.

Australia’s Ambassador to Vietnam, Andrew Goledzinowski, emphasized the growing agricultural ties and highlighted Australia’s support for Vietnam’s low-emission rice production project. Vietnamese fruits are already exported to over 60 countries, including markets with stringent quality standards like France, Germany, and South Korea.

Vietnam's passion fruit export industry has seen significant growth, with a 300% increase in production and export value over the past five years. Over 12,000 hectares of passion fruit are currently under cultivation, concentrated in the northern mountainous regions and the Central Highlands. Vietnam is focusing on improving product quality, traceability, and expanding passion fruit cultivation, which is providing substantial income for farmers. This agreement represents a continued effort to enhance market access and agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and Australia.
