Red lady papaya farming gets popular in Gopalganj

September 20, 2024 | The Financial Express |

Red lady papaya cultivation is surging in Kasiani upazila, Gopalganj, due to its profitability. Local farmers, such as Nayab Mollah, are reporting substantial yields; Mollah anticipates about 255 maunds from his 85 decimal plot, valued at approximately Tk 306,000, with market prices reaching Tk 1,200 per maund.

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) reports that around 48 hectares are dedicated to this crop, involving about 1,200 farmers. The production target for the district is set at 35,565 tons. Sub-assistant agriculture officer Sanjib Kumar Ghose highlights the variety’s short growth cycle and increasing popularity among farmers.

Despite the promise of profits, challenges remain. Md Mominur Rahman, who planted red lady papaya on 40 decimals, noted difficulties due to financial constraints and insufficient marketing facilities. He achieved a profit of Tk 144,000 against production costs of Tk 75,000 but believes that better support and marketing opportunities could significantly enhance earnings.

Kazi Ezajul Karim, the Upazila Agriculture Officer, emphasized the need for accessible loans to boost cultivation and profits. He envisions a future where Bangladesh can export papaya, generating foreign currency and further benefiting local farmers. The papaya variety matures in just 140 to 145 days, making it an attractive option for farmers seeking quick returns.
