Taiwan company makes low carbon footprint fabric with pineapple leaves

A Taiwanese company, UKL, has developed an eco-friendly fabric from pineapple leaf fiber, boasting a lower carbon footprint than cotton or linen. The fabric’s carbon emissions are 0.784 CO2e per kilogram, and UKL has applied for carbon footprint certification. With Taiwan producing over 800 kilotons of pineapple leaf by-product annually, this innovation not only addresses disposal challenges but also supports local farmers by stabilizing their profits. The company is collaborating with farmers in Kaohsiung and Pingtung County to expand product development. This initiative was showcased at the 2024 Circular Economy Innovation Exhibition in Taipei.
