Vietnam's fruit exports have surged significantly in 2023, with durian surpassing dragon fruit as the leading foreign currency earner, generating $2.2 billion—five times more than the previous year. The total area dedicated to fruit cultivation has expanded to nearly 1.25 million hectares, a 1.6-fold increase over the past decade. The Mekong Delta and the northern midland and mountainous regions are the top fruit-producing areas, representing 33% and 23% of the total cultivation area, respectively. Overall, fruit and vegetable exports reached over $5.6 billion in 2023, reflecting a growth of 1.47 times since 2018.
To maintain competitiveness in the global market, Vinafruit emphasizes the importance of adhering to quality standards like VietGAP and GlobalGAP. It suggests developing specific standards for various fruit and vegetable types and utilizing advanced farming techniques to improve quality and profitability. Implementing electronic traceability systems was also highlighted as essential for ensuring transparency and building consumer trust. During the conference, officials and experts discussed policies for supporting export cultivation and signed memoranda of understanding to enhance cooperation in the production and consumption of fruit products, focusing on mango and citrus fruits.
