Western Australia's avocado industry has achieved remarkable growth, producing over 65,000 tons in the last financial year, accounting for 44% of Australia’s total output. This success has attracted international attention, with a recent trade mission bringing representatives from India, Thailand, Japan, and the Middle East to explore market opportunities.
India shows significant potential as a key export destination, aided by a free trade agreement between the two countries. Indian retailers, such as Saurabh Raina, are keen to introduce avocados to their domestic market, promoting creative uses like avocado milkshakes to cater to local tastes. Educational campaigns aim to increase avocado awareness among Indian consumers.
Japan has also seen an impressive 226% growth in avocado imports, reflecting expanding global demand. Brad Rodgers, West Australian director of Avocados Australia, emphasized the role of strategic marketing and early harvesting—enabled by favorable climatic conditions—in driving export success.
The Avocado Collective, comprising over 80 local growers, anticipates further expansion, projecting production to grow from 3.2 million to 6 million trays. Supported by state investments in research and infrastructure, Western Australia's avocado industry is poised for sustained development, offering high-quality, flavorful produce that meets the demands of diverse international markets.
