Parmeshwar Thorat, a farmer from drought-prone Beed, Maharashtra, pioneered avocado farming, overcoming harsh conditions through innovation and organic practices. Starting with 50 saplings in 2018, he now manages a thriving 1.75-acre farm with 300 trees, producing 1,200 kg of avocados and earning Rs 10 lakh per acre in 2023. Utilizing techniques like drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and grafting, Parmeshwar adapted to Beed's arid climate while maintaining sustainability.
Initially facing skepticism, he built demand locally, selling avocados at Rs 200 each and saplings at Rs 300. His commitment to organic farming enhances fruit quality, appealing to health-conscious consumers. Parmeshwar also educates farmers on drought-resilient avocado farming, sharing his knowledge widely. Looking ahead, he plans to expand into Delhi and Mumbai markets while continuing his local sales.
