Việt Nam promotes coconut exports, enhances industry value

December 15, 2024 | Việt Nam News |

Vietnam's coconut industry has grown significantly, with export turnover rising from $180 million in 2010 to $900 million in 2023. The country aims to stabilize its coconut cultivation area between 195,000 and 210,000 hectares by 2030, mainly in the Mekong Delta. This growth is attributed to the rising acceptance of Vietnamese coconuts in international markets, especially in the US and Europe, as well as ongoing negotiations for export to China.

Vietnam has already met its cultivation targets, and future efforts will focus on improving product quality and diversifying high-value coconut by-products. With 30% of coconut areas meeting VietGAP standards and many granted traceability codes, farmers' incomes have increased. China, with an annual demand for four billion coconuts, is a key market, and the recent protocol for fresh coconut exports to China offers significant growth opportunities. However, businesses must meet strict food safety and pesticide residue standards in both China and the EU.

Bến Tre province, which contributes nearly 42% of Vietnam's coconut exports, has expanded organic farming and traceability measures. For sustained success, businesses must focus on quality, pricing, and compliance with international standards to thrive in competitive markets.
