Soaring coconut prices sour Christmas cheer for Goan sweet-makers

December 18, 2024 | O HERALDO|

Goa faces a coconut shortage and steep price hikes amid Christmas preparations, affecting households, vendors, and traditional sweet makers. Small coconuts now cost Rs 20, medium-sized Rs 40, and large ones Rs 50, doubling prices over two months. Limited local supply and increased reliance on imports from Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala exacerbate the issue. Coconut plucker shortages and the lucrative tender coconut market have worsened the crunch, as farmers prefer selling tender coconuts for Rs 40-50 each.

The shortage impacts Christmas treats like bebinca and dodol, forcing sweet makers and households to cut back. Vendors cite poor quality and smaller coconuts dominating the market, further frustrating consumers. The price surge threatens festive traditions, highlighting a growing strain on the local coconut supply chain.
