China says Vietnam durian, jackfruit shipments tainted

January 12, 2025 | VnExpress|

Vietnam's fresh durian and jackfruit exports have faced compliance issues with China's phytosanitary and food safety standards, according to a recent warning from China's General Administration of Customs. This threatens Vietnam's agricultural reputation globally, prompting the Plant Protection Department to call for stricter oversight of farming and export packaging processes. Farmers and facilities were urged to meet pesticide residue, heavy metal, and traceability standards.

The EU increased inspections of Vietnamese durian imports to 20% from January 8 due to excessive pesticide residues. Fraudulent cultivation and packaging codes have also emerged, allowing unauthorized exports to China. Last year, cadmium contamination led to several Vietnamese durian shipments being rejected by China, temporarily lowering prices.

In 2024, Vietnam’s durian export revenue reached $3.3 billion, a $1 billion increase from 2023. Durian accounted for nearly half of Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports, with 90% destined for China. Strengthened quality control is seen as vital to sustaining this growth and maintaining market trust.
