Australian dragon egg lychees, priced at VND1.4 million ($55) per kilogram, are gaining popularity in Vietnam ahead of Tet. These lychees, double or triple the size of traditional Vietnamese varieties, are imported during Australia’s December-February harvest, aligning with Lunar New Year demand.
Limited supply, meticulous selection, and air freight transportation contribute to their premium price. Growing interest has seen many customers purchasing 5-kilogram boxes as gifts despite a 10-15% price increase since 2023.
Vietnam imported $143 million worth of Australian fruits and vegetables in 2024, making Australia its third-largest supplier after the U.S. and China.
