Farmers in Kerala are shifting from traditional crops to exotic fruits like dragon fruit, rambutan, mangosteen, and avocado due to climate challenges and high demand. Exotic fruits offer better yields, steady income, and low maintenance. Success stories include:
- Rambutan: Renny Jacob turned his rubber plantation into a profitable rambutan farm with 12 varieties.
- Dragon Fruit: Jose in Pathanamthitta earns Rs 200/kg from his low-maintenance dragon fruit farm.
- Mangosteen: Ahmed Kutty runs a 20-acre mangosteen farm, highlighting its steady income potential and export opportunities.
- Avocado: Eapen Thomas and Varkey George cultivate avocado for its growing popularity and demand in various food products.
Kerala Agriculture University promotes diversification with a research farm offering 80 exotic fruit varieties and encourages value-added products to address short shelf life. Farmers seek state support to scale up cultivation, hoping Kerala can become a major exporter of exotic fruits within 15 years.
