Kenya has announced a temporary suspension of avocado and macadamia exports to prevent immature produce from entering global markets. The ban on macadamia exports will run from Nov. 2, 2024, to March 1, 2025, while avocado exports will be restricted starting Oct. 25.
The Agriculture Food Authority (AFA) aims to sustain Kenya's international reputation and ensure proper crop maturity cycles. Small air shipments of avocados will be permitted, but sea shipments are banned. Exporters are warned against mixing mangoes and avocados to compensate for shortages.
The government plans to introduce a minimum guarantee price for locally sold produce to protect farmers from exploitation. Major export destinations for Kenyan nuts and fruits include the Middle East, Europe, and China. Authorities will review avocado maturity trends in December and adjust the suspension accordingly.
