January 10, 2025 | Foods |

A research team from University Miguel Hernández, Spain, and Escuela Politécnica Superior de Chimborazo (ESPOCH), Ecuador, conducted a comprehensive review on the yellow pitahaya (Selenicereus megalanthus Haw.), an exotic fruit native to Mesoamerica. Commonly referred to as dragon fruit, yellow pitahaya has garnered global attention in recent years for its rich nutritional profile, appealing organoleptic properties, and high concentrations of antioxidants and bioactive compounds.

Spain has recently embraced pitahaya as a new tropical crop, with significant growth in its cultivation. However, most existing research focuses on red cultivars, leaving a knowledge gap regarding the yellow pitahaya. This review compiles and discusses current knowledge on various aspects of pitahaya production, including different types of cultivars, growth and ripening processes, quality attributes, and postharvest storage practices.

Additionally, the study explores the potential uses of pitahaya by-products and highlights its health-related properties. By addressing the limited research on yellow pitahaya, the review offers insights for optimizing cultivation, improving postharvest handling, and promoting the sustainable use of by-products. The findings serve as a valuable reference for future studies and agricultural initiatives aimed at supporting the expansion of pitahaya cultivation and its market presence globally.
