New durian checks to keep China happy

February 18, 2025 | Bangkok Post |

Thailand is strengthening food safety measures to maintain its dominance in China's durian market, where it holds a 57% market share. Minister of Agriculture Narumon Pinyosinwat met with China's GACC to ensure Thai fruit imports meet strict safety standards. Thailand exports durians worth 130-140 billion baht annually, with growth expected in 2025.

Concerns over contamination with the carcinogenic food coloring Basic Yellow 2 (BY2) have prompted the Thai government to enhance pre-export screening. The Department of Agriculture and the Fruit Board will oversee inspections for BY2, cadmium, and pests, with at least five laboratories prepared for testing.

Additionally, Thailand is working to expand its livestock exports to China. A new quarantine facility in Chiang Rai ensures compliance with health standards, addressing previous concerns over hand, foot, and mouth disease. Measures include stricter cattle health examinations and increased vaccination efforts to raise disease protection efficiency to 100%.

These initiatives aim to boost confidence in Thai agricultural exports, ensuring continued access to China's lucrative markets for both durians and cattle products.
