Ornamental pomelo trees have become a Tet highlight in Vietnam, with ancient specimens valued at hundreds of millions of dongs. In Hung Yen, Hoang Dinh Chinh’s garden features the 100-year-old “Family Hearth” tree, priced at 800 million VND ($33,600), bearing over 600 golden-yellow pomelos. Despite offers nearing $25,000, Chinh declined, hoping for a higher price.
Another prized tree, “Hometown Roots,” valued at 650 million VND ($27,300), resembles a village banyan tree, symbolizing protection and community. It stands 4 meters tall, with a wide canopy and over 200 naturally ripened pomelos.
Cultivating these trees requires years of meticulous care, with fruit production heavily influenced by weather. Other notable specimens include the “Golden Throne,” valued at 500 million VND ($21,000), and trees shaped in symbolic designs like “Three Blessings” and “Five Blessings,” attracting collectors nationwide.
The growing popularity of ornamental pomelos reflects their cultural, aesthetic, and Feng Shui significance, making them a cherished part of Tet traditions.
