Fresh pineapple sales flatline as consumers avoid 'inconvenient' fruits

February 02, 2025 | ABC News |

Australian pineapple sales are stagnating as consumers prioritize convenience, avoiding fruits requiring preparation. Despite being fresh, sweet, and affordable, pineapples are perceived as too difficult and messy to eat. Growers, including Tropical Pines, report flat consumption despite a growing population.

Experts attribute declining sales to modern time constraints and shifting shopping behaviors. Marketing research from Hort Innovation found only 5.5% of households express a desire to buy pineapples, with preparation effort and waste concerns as major barriers. Other fruits like pomegranates and kiwis face similar challenges.

Retail experts suggest value-added products like pre-cut fruit, cold-pressed juice, and dried pineapple could boost sales. Farmers are also turning to social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to educate younger consumers on quick preparation methods.

Declining fresh fruit and vegetable consumption is a broader issue. 93% of Australians do not eat enough vegetables, with many perceiving them as expensive despite being cheaper than snack foods. Increasing vegetable intake by one daily serving could add $4.7 billion to the economy.

Pineapple growers are working on solutions, focusing on convenience-driven products, better education, and engaging social media campaigns to attract new consumers and revitalize sales.
