Price of tender coconuts may go up this summer
February 17, 2025 | Times of India |
Tender coconut prices in Coimbatore are expected to exceed Rs 50 per fruit this summer due to a significant drop in supply. Currently priced at Rs 34 per fruit, the market is already experiencing shortages before peak summer demand. Farmers in the Pollachi-Anaimalai region, a key supplier, report that daily procurement has dropped from 4 lakh to just 1 lakh coconuts compared to previous years.
The low yield is attributed to last year’s extreme summer and widespread wilt disease affecting coconut trees. Some farmers report only 10% of their usual yield, with many trees producing premature or delayed fruit. In Karnataka, prices have already hit Rs 40, while Maharashtra buyers are willing to pay Rs 100 per fruit, signaling an impending price surge.
Farmers warn that meeting summer demand will be a challenge, as supply is far below required levels. With reduced availability and high demand, tender coconut prices are expected to break records this year.
