Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn attended the Inventors' Day 2025 event to observe award-winning innovations, including the "Phra Ratchathan 89" strawberry. This new strawberry variety, developed by Naresuan University researchers since 2014, won the NRCT Award for its potential economic and social impact.
This hybrid strawberry, a cross between an Israeli and a Thai variety, boasts large size, high sweetness (12.3 Brix), firm texture, and rich anthocyanin content—twice that of commercial varieties. It can generate up to 57,000 THB per rai for farmers.
Named in 2022 by King Rama X to honor the late King Rama IX’s 89th birthday, the variety faces storage challenges but benefits from preservation techniques using chitosan and methyl jasmonate solutions. It is currently tested in four Royal Project stations in Chiang Mai and will be available in leading stores nationwide in 2025.
