Indonesia plans to directly export frozen durians to China in 2025, marking a significant step in expanding its agricultural exports. Currently, Indonesian durians reach China via Thailand, which increases shipping time and costs. Direct exports are expected to cut transit time from a month to a week and halve shipping expenses. Parigi Moutong in Central Sulawesi, known for its Monthong durians, is leading these efforts. Local companies like PT Ammar Durian Indonesia and PT Silvia Amerta Jaya are preparing to meet China’s strict quality standards, including traceability and good agricultural practices. Indonesia aims to capitalize on China’s massive demand, where durian imports reached nearly US$7 billion in 2024. Efforts are underway to equip farmers with modern tools and increase certified farmland. The government is also promoting five premium durian varieties for large-scale development. Strengthening trade ties with China, Indonesia hopes to move from being a top producer to a major exporter. Observers see this initiative as part of broader economic diplomacy, enhancing Indonesia’s presence in global fruit markets and reducing reliance on domestic consumption. By establishing direct export routes, Indonesia aims to increase exports, boost farmer incomes, and secure a larger share of the lucrative durian trade.
