From omics to orchard: The role of omics in durian cultivation

A review exploring the potential applications of omics technologies to address key challenges in durian (Durio zibethinus) cultivation was conducted by researchers from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. Durian is a commercially important fruit in Southeast Asia, with Thailand and Malaysia as major exporters. However, increasing global demand is met with significant production challenges, including climate change impacts, disease outbreaks, and rising resistance of pathogens to chemical treatments.

The review discusses how omics technologies—genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics—can contribute to understanding the molecular basis of important traits in durian, such as disease resistance, fruit quality, and ripening. While the application of omics in durian remains limited, insights from other fruit crops show promising directions for improving breeding programs and orchard management.

The authors emphasize the need to expand durian-specific omics research and suggest that advancements in technology and reduced research costs could enable broader adoption. The integration of omics tools is expected to support more efficient and sustainable durian production by enhancing yield, quality, and resilience against environmental stresses. This review highlights the role of molecular approaches as a foundation for future improvements in durian agriculture.
