Laos is launching a large-scale durian cultivation project in Attapeu province, aiming to become a key supplier to the Chinese market. The initiative will cover more than 273 hectares and aligns with the national policy promoting commercial agriculture and forest conservation through private investment. The rising demand for durian in China has prompted Laos to focus on expanding production for both domestic consumption and export, with an emphasis on generating foreign currency. The government has set a target of 4.3% agricultural growth in 2025, aiming for agriculture to contribute 22.4% to the national GDP.
