Mango production in Bangladesh’s Rangpur agricultural region is expected to see a bumper harvest this year, thanks to favorable weather conditions following recent rains that ended a brief drought. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), nearly 98% of mango trees have bloomed in what is considered an "on-season." Farmers across the five districts—Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, and Nilphamari—are actively nurturing tender mango fruits, with high hopes for a profitable yield.
Growers like Azizar Rahman, Mukul Shah, and Abdul Halim, cultivating popular varieties such as Haribhanga, Gopalbhog, Amrapali, and Hatibandha on large orchard plots, report excellent fruit development. Last season, the region produced 84,874 tons of mangoes from 6,189 hectares, including 38,508 tons of Haribhanga mangoes from 2,556 hectares.
This year, the cultivated area has slightly increased, raising expectations for higher output. Agriculture officials are working closely with farmers to guide pest management and orchard care to ensure fruit quality. Experts like Dr. Md. Abu Sayem from the DAE’s Burirhat Horticulture Center predict a successful harvest if weather conditions remain stable and pest attacks are minimal through the fruiting period.
The harvest is expected in May and June.
