DTI: Trump tariffs could mean more sales of coconut oil, mangoes, other PH exports

The Philippines may benefit from U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed tariff policy, which imposes lower tariffs on Philippine goods compared to neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Trade Secretary Cristina Roque stated that while U.S. tariffs would impact prices, Philippine products like coconut oil and dried mangoes would remain more competitive than Thai and Cambodian imports, which face higher tariffs of up to 49%. The Philippines faces a 17% tariff, creating a favorable trade gap.
Roque said this advantage could lead to expanded production and more jobs, particularly for companies like a major dried mango supplier in Cebu, which previously struggled with high production costs and competition. Firms are preparing to scale operations, potentially boosting employment.
Roque also emphasized the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) proactive search for new markets and its plans to highlight the Philippines’ investment appeal and historical trade ties during upcoming trade talks in Washington, D.C., in May. While ASEAN nations may eventually negotiate with the U.S. as a bloc, for now, each country is pursuing individual efforts. The Philippines aims to leverage this opportunity to increase exports, attract investment, and stimulate job creation.
