Coconuts and tender coconuts have become scarce in coastal Karnataka, despite strong market demand and rising prices. Daily essentials for rituals and summer hydration, coconuts now cost Rs 65–70 per kg—double last year’s price—while premium coconut oil reaches Rs 300 per litre. Tender coconuts have also risen in price from Rs 50 to Rs 60, but supply is dwindling.
With the harvest season over, many farmers have either stored their produce or converted it into copra. Most coconut trees are showing minimal fruit. Farmers are also reluctant to cultivate new trees due to damage from wild animals like monkeys, which feed on coconuts and destroy inflorescences. Diseases such as “elechukki” have further reduced yields.
Vendors say it’s hard to procure coconuts even for money, with temple festivals and other large events facing shortages. Deliveries from the Ghats have dropped, and retailers cannot meet demand. Some farmers, despite owning dozens of trees, are forced to buy coconuts due to crop losses from wildlife.
Overall, a combination of poor yield, wildlife interference, weather damage, disease, and farmers holding back stock has led to a severe shortage and soaring prices, affecting consumers and retailers alike.
