The Philippines’ pineapple industry is set to become more robust in 2024, with projected production expected to surpass 3.12 million metric tons, up from 2.9 million MT in 2023. The Department of Agriculture (DA) reported a 7.5% increase in global pineapple and pineapple product exports, reaching USD 787.12 million. China remains the top export destination, accounting for USD 183.43 million in purchases. DA spokesperson Arnel de Mesa highlighted the sector's momentum, driven by strong international demand, especially from China and Europe. The government continues to support the industry through input distribution, machinery, and research and development (R&D) projects. There is also a growing focus on organic pineapple cultivation to cater to niche markets. The average production per hectare is expected to reach 44 metric tons. Around 24,000 farmers, mainly based in Mindanao, contribute to the country’s pineapple output. The DA’s ongoing support aims to sustain the industry’s growth and increase the global competitiveness of Philippine pineapples.
