Supply crunch: Coconut rates double, hit Rs 45-50 per piece

Coconut prices in Goa have surged sharply this summer, with mature coconuts selling at Rs 45–50 each in retail markets—nearly double the usual price. Wholesale rates have risen to around Rs 40 per piece, while tender coconuts now cost about Rs 60. Vendors attribute this price hike to a supply shortage from major sourcing states like Maharashtra and Karnataka, coupled with increased demand during the hot season.
Retailers cite lower yields and transport costs as additional factors contributing to the spike. The demand for coconut water, a popular summer drink, has further fueled price increases. Some vendors in Panaji even suggest that until the monsoon season begins, prices are unlikely to drop significantly.
Consumers who depend on coconuts for cooking, religious rituals, and hydration are feeling the impact. “Coconuts are a staple in Goan households, and such high prices during peak summer are distressing,” said local shopper Sharvari Naik.
Vendors anticipate that prices may normalize around Rs 25–30 per piece by June or July, once the monsoon improves supply conditions. Until then, both sellers and buyers are coping with the seasonal market imbalance affecting this essential tropical commodity.
