Despite Water Scarcity, Morocco Exports 100,000 Tons of Avocados

June 06, 2025 | Morocco World News |

Morocco has emerged as a major global avocado exporter, surpassing the 100,000-ton export mark for the first time. This milestone signals the country’s growing influence in a market traditionally led by Latin American nations. Despite falling global avocado prices caused by oversupply from countries like Peru and Mexico, Morocco exceeded expectations due to favorable weather, strong harvests, and efficient logistics. Europe remains its top market, where competition is rising and price volatility is common.

Moroccan exporters have succeeded by prioritizing quality, consistency, shelf life, and reliable delivery—attributes that now rival price in importance for global buyers. However, the country’s rapid avocado expansion raises sustainability concerns. Avocado farming is water-intensive, and Morocco is already facing chronic droughts and water scarcity. As more land is converted to avocado plantations to meet global demand, the environmental cost is growing.

The challenge ahead lies in balancing economic growth through agricultural exports with the preservation of natural resources. Morocco’s ability to maintain its export momentum while addressing environmental sustainability will be crucial for the future of its avocado industry.
