Mango trade picks up again in Rajshahi after Eid break

June 09, 2025 | Daily Observer|

Mango trading has resumed in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, and Naogaon after Eid-ul-Azha, with popular varieties like Langra, Khirsapat, Himsagar, and Amropaly boosting market activity. Prices, which had dropped by Tk 400–600 per mound due to the holiday slowdown, are stabilizing as courier services and roadside vendors ramp up operations. Major wholesale markets are bustling, and farmers are now harvesting early-season varieties. Late-season mangoes such as Fazly and Ashwina will arrive soon, ensuring steady supply.

Over 265,000 farmers and 130,000 support workers rely on mango trade in the region. Production estimates include 450,000 tons from Chapainawabganj, 432,000 tons from Naogaon, and 260,000 tons from Rajshahi. A key policy change mandates mangoes be sold by kilogram rather than the traditional “Dhalan” system, which caused farmers financial losses by overweighing mounds. This shift aims to ensure fair payments.

The Divisional Commissioner convened a meeting with stakeholders to implement the kilogram-based system, now in effect. Local authorities will monitor enforcement, and violators of the new system will face legal consequences. The reform is expected to protect farmer incomes and bring transparency to the mango trade.
