California Avocado Commission's response to Taiwan's blocking of U.S. avocado imports

May 09, 2025 | Fresh Fruit Portal |

Taiwan recently rejected nearly 4,000 kg of U.S. avocados due to cadmium levels exceeding local safety standards. The rejected shipments, imported by Chiawei Enterprise Co. and Ourmart Marketing Co., have triggered Taiwan to increase sampling rates for future imports from these companies. Cadmium, a naturally occurring metal in soil, can be absorbed by crops like avocados, especially in regions along the Pacific Rim. While U.S. officials stress that cadmium levels in the rejected avocados were far below international health risk thresholds, Taiwan maintains stricter regulations likely due to rice’s cadmium accumulation in Asian diets. Experts from the California Avocado Commission emphasized that such cadmium presence is rare and not widespread, but current testing methods cannot feasibly assess every individual fruit. Taiwan has previously rejected U.S. avocado shipments for the same reason, along with other imports from countries like Canada and China. Despite the setback, U.S. avocado exporters continue efforts to meet Taiwan’s safety standards, and discussions between trade partners are likely ongoing to avoid disruption. Taiwan’s zero-tolerance approach reflects heightened food safety vigilance rather than a rejection of U.S. produce quality. The issue highlights the challenges of aligning international food safety standards amid rising global trade.
