For the first time, over half a ton of Pangasinan mangoes were commercially exported to Italy, marking a significant milestone for Philippine agriculture. This achievement was made possible by Filipino entrepreneurs in Rome, with support from the Philippine Department of Agriculture and Embassy. The mangoes met strict European standards and were welcomed in Filipino stores across Italy. The initiative supports President Marcos Jr.’s vision to boost agricultural exports and farmer incomes. It also aligns with the FAO’s “One Country One Priority Product” initiative, showcasing the mango as a symbol of climate-smart agriculture and inclusive development. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Laurel emphasized the economic and symbolic value of this export success, calling it a testament to public-private collaboration and diaspora entrepreneurship. The Department of Agriculture also presented a $50-million plan to sustainably support 27,000 mango-farming households. Italy, already a notable trade partner, now adds mangoes to its imports from the Philippines. The initiative is seen as a step toward diversifying export markets, strengthening rural economies, and showcasing Filipino produce globally. Officials describe the event as not just a trade success, but a celebration of Filipino resilience, innovation, and global ambition. The shipment sets the stage for broader agricultural export expansion in the future.
