Spain’s avocado harvest rebounded in 2024/25 with a 20% increase over last season, thanks to heavy rainfall ending a prolonged drought in key production regions of Axarquía and Costa Tropical. Over 75,000 tons were harvested, aided by La Viñuela reservoir surpassing 50% capacity for the first time in years, enabling irrigation after a three-year hiatus. New production areas in Huelva, Cadiz, Valencia, and the Canary Islands also contributed to growth. Álvaro Palacios, president of the Spanish Tropical Fruit Association (AET), stressed the importance of improved water infrastructure—such as desalination and reservoir connections—to support expanding avocado cultivation and meet growing European demand. He urged unified action across the sector and stronger government support to maintain Spain’s leadership in tropical fruit production and ensure long-term sustainability for thousands of farming families.
