Cambodia has officially received approval to export fresh durian to China, marking a major opportunity for the country’s agricultural sector. According to Khim Finan, Undersecretary of State and spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Cambodia currently cultivates around 10,000 hectares of durian, yielding 170,000 to 180,000 tons annually. As part of the new export arrangement, 112 durian farms and 30 packing facilities have been approved by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC).
However, Finan warned that the use of banned chemicals could threaten access to the Chinese market. He urged all durian farmers, particularly plantation owners, to follow Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to ensure product safety and quality. All farms wishing to export must first register, undergo evaluation, and receive official approval.
The Ministry emphasizes collaboration among all stakeholders to maintain standards and build a sustainable export industry. If properly managed, the Chinese market could significantly boost Cambodia’s durian exports and improve farmers’ incomes. This milestone highlights the importance of compliance, traceability, and responsible farming in expanding Cambodia’s agricultural exports.
