President John Mahama has ordered the distribution of 3 million coconut seedlings to boost Ghana’s coconut production from 90,000 to 120,000 hectares. The initiative aims to strengthen Ghana’s position as Africa’s top producer and improve its global ranking, currently 12th worldwide. Dr. Peter Otokunor, Director of Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness, stated that the seedlings will help the country achieve its medium-term goal of reaching 150,000 hectares. High-value, elite coconut seedlings will be provided to farmers, including commercial growers, to increase yields and competitiveness. The effort is part of a larger strategy to unlock the economic potential of Ghana’s coconut industry, which remains underdeveloped despite strong market demand. Otokunor emphasized the importance of rapid expansion, noting global competitors like the Philippines, which recently launched a 50-million seedling distribution plan. The Ghanaian government hopes this initiative will empower farmers, expand cultivable land, and help the country meet international demand for coconut and related products.
