Securing the Tambun pomelo identity

Gopeng MP Tan Kar Hing has called for the registration of Tambun pomelo as an intellectual property (IP) under geographical indications to protect its name, reputation, and ensure authenticity. Grown in Tambun since the 1940s, the pomelo has become a recognizable brand, with exports to countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and China. Tan emphasized that the fruit’s unique quality stems from specific soil conditions, climate, and cultivation practices, which must be clearly defined for IP registration. The move aims to prevent other regions from misusing the “Tambun” name and ensure added value for local growers. Tan hopes to complete the registration process within six months and subsequently pursue Malaysia Good Agricultural Practices (MyGAP) certification and downstream development. He encouraged local growers from Tambun, Ampang, and Ulu Piah to form a dedicated NGO to lead the registration efforts. The proposed IP would help preserve the fruit’s reputation and guarantee that only pomelos grown under Tambun’s specific conditions can carry the name. Tan concluded that geographical protection would elevate the brand’s integrity and support long-term growth of the local pomelo industry.
