The EU has approved Taiwan’s application to export mangoes and guavas to all 27 EU member states after a lengthy suspension due to quarantine concerns over pests like Oriental and melon fruit flies. Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture secured approval by demonstrating effective quarantine treatments—such as 30-minute steam heating of mangoes—and providing export records to countries like Japan and the US to prove its capabilities.
This marks a milestone for Taiwan, opening up high-end European markets traditionally dominated by Latin American fruit exporters. The government plans to use precision marketing and premium branding to promote Taiwan’s produce, while offering export incentives and helping exporters build distribution networks through diplomatic missions, trade channels, and events in Europe.
While mango and guava exports are now approved, applications for other fruit like tangerines remain pending due to unresolved issues such as citrus canker prevention. Still, the ministry emphasized its commitment to expanding Taiwan’s agricultural exports globally.
Currently, Taiwan exports mangoes to Japan, South Korea, Australia, and others, while guavas are sold in the US, China, and Southeast Asia. The ministry aims to further raise the profile of Taiwan’s fruit through European promotions and partnerships with department stores and cultural events.
