Fresh Del Monte’s Zero pineapple shows how fruitful sustainability can be

July 09, 2025 | Food Navigator |

Fresh Del Monte has launched the “Del Monte Zero” pineapple—a carbon-neutral product grown in Costa Rica—demonstrating its deep commitment to sustainability. This initiative addresses concerns about environmental damage by ensuring the entire pineapple supply chain, from farm to table, remains carbon neutral. The company incorporates conservation, reforestation, and biodiversity protection at the farm level, with efforts validated through third-party certification by SCS Global Services. These pineapples carry a distinctive black tag, helping consumers make informed, values-driven choices. Though priced higher due to certification and sustainability investments, many consumers are willing to pay a premium for eco-friendly products.

Del Monte currently supplies about 1 million boxes of the Zero pineapple annually and plans to expand production. Beyond pineapples, the company’s broader sustainability efforts include teaching children about sustainable farming, engaging in upcycling initiatives (such as repurposing pineapple syrup for fruit cups), and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It also uses reusable containers for packing bananas to North America. Fresh Del Monte positions these efforts as part of its long-standing sustainability DNA, aiming to provide transparency and drive real change through action rather than just claims—offering consumers not just fruit, but a chance to support environmental stewardship with every purchase.
