Chinese lychee bears sweetness in Mexican homes

July 05, 2025 | China Daily |

Lychee, native to China, has a long but little-known history in Mexico, where Chinese migrants introduced the fruit in the late 19th century. While commercial cultivation only began in the 1970s, lychee has since become a beloved seasonal treat across Mexican households. Now grown in 13 states including Veracruz, Puebla, and Oaxaca, Mexico produced over 26,000 metric tons of lychees in 2023, with much of it exported to North America, where the fruit commands a premium price.

The lychee's presence in Mexico reflects a story of migration and cultural fusion. For Chinese immigrants and their descendants in North America, the fruit offers a nostalgic taste of home. Advances in cold-chain logistics and preservation by Chinese institutions have allowed fresh lychees from Guangdong province to reach global markets like the Middle East, Europe, and the U.S. within three days.

Though the lychees in Mexico may differ slightly in taste and texture from their Chinese counterparts, they symbolize a shared cultural bridge. In Latin America, lychee remains a luxury fruit in countries like Panama and Brazil, where cultivation is expanding. The fruit continues to connect communities across oceans, combining history, migration, and innovation into its modern-day appeal.
