Rare seedless lychee hard to lay hands on despite prices doubling to $29 per kilogram

Seedless lychees from Thanh Hoa are in high demand despite prices doubling to VND750,000/kg due to limited supply. Retailers struggle to meet high pre-order volumes, with customers praising the fruit’s crisp texture and mild sweetness. This premium lychee, larger and less sugary than regular varieties, contains no or tiny seeds, and is grown under strict VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards. Ho Guom – Song Am High Tech Agriculture, the main producer, saw a 33% drop in output to seven tons this year due to pests and weather issues, exporting only 550 kg to France and falling short of domestic demand. The company plans to expand its 40-hectare farm to 200 hectares by 2030. Seedless lychee cultivation is still limited due to specific climate and farming requirements. The fruit is only harvested in June–July in Vietnam and China. Vietnamese seedless lychees are considered superior to Chinese imports, known for their freshness, lighter taste, and lower bitterness, and are positioned as a luxury item for domestic and export markets. The Ministry of Agriculture supports branding the fruit for premium consumers, although large-scale farming remains a challenge. Demand is driven by high-income urban buyers, with orders placed a month in advance.
