Farmers in Malaysia’s Penang urged to register for durian tracking system as local varieties tastier than Black Thorn appear

Penang, Malaysia, is urging farmers to register local durian varieties under its new “Track and Trace” system to preserve quality and authenticity. Launched in June with tech support from MIMOS, the system uses QR codes to trace each durian to its origin. The initiative aims to include at least 75% of farms by the next season. Though many unregistered kampung durians meet quality standards—some reportedly tasting better than the prized Black Thorn—farmers have been hesitant to register them. Chairman Fahmi Zainol emphasized that registering high-quality kampung durians could expand Penang’s reputation for premium varieties like Musang King, Red Prawn, and Tupai King. Currently, 40% of farms are enrolled. The government plans to prioritize registered farms for aid, promotions, and official programs. In 2023, Penang exported over 67,000 kilograms of durians, with Musang King and Black Thorn being top exports. The registration system is designed to boost transparency, support export growth, and protect Penang’s durian legacy.
