Florida dragon fruit: small size, big ambitions

August 04, 2025 | Fresh Fruit Portal |

Florida’s dragon fruit industry is celebrating a strong 2025 season, largely thanks to favorable weather conditions. According to Jose M. Roggiero, President & CEO of Freshway Produce Inc., lighter rainfall has reduced fungal issues, improving yields and fruit quality. One of the company’s Southern Florida farms, with 44 acres of red and white dragon fruit, has seen notable production gains.

Freshway, which has worked with Florida-grown dragon fruit since 2018, also sources from countries like Ecuador and Nicaragua to ensure year-round supply. Local harvests typically run from June through November, and production capacity continues to expand.

While Florida’s dragon fruit is smaller than imports, Roggiero views this as an advantage, positioning it as a convenient, snack-sized option. Freshway markets its produce as farm fresh, local, and timely, with retail prices generally between $15 and $20 per box.

The company supports local agriculture through programs like Fresh From Florida and emphasizes post-harvest refrigeration to preserve fruit quality and extend shelf life. With rising demand and careful promotion, Florida-grown dragon fruit is steadily gaining traction among consumers seeking fresh, locally produced options.
