A new OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook projects rising global demand for pineapples over the next decade, with the Philippines and Costa Rica expected to see the greatest export growth. In 2024, pineapple exports grew 4% to 3.3 million metric tons (MMT), mainly supplied by Costa Rica (65% share) and the Philippines (21%). By 2034, global exports are forecast to reach 3.7 MMT, driven by the United States and European Union, which together will account for over 60% of imports.
The United States is projected to remain the largest importer at 1.3 MMT (36% global share), while the EU will hold 26%. Rising Chinese demand, expected to grow nearly 5% annually to 0.37 MMT by 2034, will be largely met by Philippine supplies. Both stable demand and low unit prices, along with the introduction of premium pineapple varieties, will support growth.
Costa Rica is projected to export 73% of its production by 2034, while the Philippines will export 21%. Global production is forecast to expand by 1.2% annually, reaching 37 MMT by 2034, with Asia (44% share) and Latin America/Caribbean (34%) leading output, mostly to satisfy domestic and regional demand.
