Agronometrics in charts: Fruit exporters face “worst time” as U.S. tariffs on Brazil threaten shipments

July 29, 2025 | Fresh Fruit Portal |

Brazil’s fruit export sector faces a major setback after the United States imposed a 50% tariff on key agricultural products, including mangoes, citrus, and grapes, which together make up 90% of Brazilian fruit exports to the U.S. The tariff, set to begin August 1, coincides with Brazil’s peak mango harvest, creating a severe disruption.

Around 70,000 tons of mangoes originally destined for the U.S. must now be redirected to Europe or Brazil’s domestic market, both of which are already saturated. This raises concerns of oversupply, plummeting prices, and heavy financial losses. Some growers may even abandon harvests, as costs for picking and logistics could exceed returns.

Future crops are also at risk, with growers hesitant to invest under uncertain trade conditions. Grapes, due to begin harvest in November, are expected to be similarly affected, while avocado access to the U.S. has stalled amid rising trade tensions.

Industry associations, including Abrafrutas and the International Fresh Produce Association, are urgently calling for diplomatic intervention, warning that the tariff could destabilize both Brazilian growers and U.S. consumers who rely on competitively priced imports. Without resolution, redirected volumes threaten to disrupt global fruit markets with volatility and falling prices.
