The study conducted by Vellore Institute of Technology, India, focused on the potential of dragon fruit (Hylocereus spp.) as a climate-resilient and economically significant crop. Dragon fruit has gained attention for its adaptability to harsh environmental conditions, including drought and high temperatures, making it particularly suitable for arid and semi-arid regions. Its relatively low requirements for water and agricultural inputs further strengthen its role in sustainable farming systems.
The review highlighted the crop’s economic importance, noting its growing commercial value and potential contributions to functional foods and nutraceutical development due to its rich content of vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds. Beyond nutritional benefits, the study emphasized dragon fruit’s capacity to generate income for smallholder farmers, offering profitability even with minimal investment.
The integration of dragon fruit into traditional farming systems was discussed as a strategy for value addition and diversification, which may help improve rural livelihoods while supporting environmentally sustainable practices. Overall, the findings suggest that dragon fruit cultivation can play an important role in addressing rural poverty, strengthening food system resilience, and aligning with broader global goals for sustainable agriculture and climate change adaptation.
