Taiwan’s pomelo production in 2025 is estimated at 46,800 tons, down 30% from previous years, mainly due to an April drought and heavy rainfall from July’s Typhoon Danas. The Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA) reported total crop damage exceeding NT$1.4 billion, including over NT$200 million in pomelo losses. In Tainan’s Madou District, strong winds caused up to 80% of fruits to fall prematurely.
Despite reduced yields, fruit quality remains high, with planting areas stable at 3,722 hectares. Pomelos are typically harvested around the Mid-Autumn Festival, with key production zones in Tainan, Hualien, Miaoli, Yunlin, and Yilan.
Exports account for about 3% of Taiwan’s pomelo output, mostly destined for China, which once imported over 90% of shipments. Although China resumed pomelo imports in 2024 after a two-year suspension, its market share dropped to 53% this year. The AFA is diversifying export markets, targeting Japan, Singapore, and Canada.
To enhance competitiveness, the agency is strengthening pest inspections, enforcing pesticide standards, and promoting production certification. It is also organizing tasting events and cooking contests to stimulate domestic demand, while positioning Taiwan’s pomelos as a trusted, high-quality fruit amid climate and trade challenges.
