Davao City’s durian industry is rapidly expanding in China, led by Maylong Enterprises Corporation (MEC), which exports both fresh and frozen durian to major Chinese buyers like China Resources Holdings Co. Ltd. In 2025, MEC exported over 451,000 kilograms of fresh durian and 325,000 kilograms of frozen products, while its sister firm shipped another 183,000 kilograms. Weekly shipments now range from 25,000 to 30,000 kilograms.
At Maylong’s 14,000-square-meter processing plant in Barangay Ula, workers sort, clean, and process durian under Bureau of Plant Industry supervision to meet export standards. Only top-grade fruit is airfreighted to China, while lower grades are processed into frozen meat and paste — products in high demand, selling for up to ¥48 per kilogram.
The company’s growth has generated hundreds of local jobs and steady income for Davao farmers. Chairman Meiman Li emphasized the firm’s mission to “create greater benefits for farmers,” ensuring even lower-grade fruits are purchased and processed.
Chinese Consul General Zhao Xiuzhen praised Davao’s durian for its superior sweetness and aroma, calling the trade a “symbol of China–Philippines cooperation.” With strong demand and solid diplomatic backing, Davao’s durian industry is cementing its place as a key player in the global fruit market.
