At the 10th National Farmers’ Forum on October 1, Vietnamese farmers emphasized the need to diversify export markets, identifying pomelos and avocados as the next major fruits targeted for export to China. Building on the success of durian shipments, Vietnam aims to finalize export protocols for these crops by the end of 2025, with the first shipments expected in early 2026.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam confirmed that China has completed field assessments, and pomelos will be prioritized before avocados. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is expediting paperwork to accelerate China’s approval process, which typically approves only one or two new fruits annually.
Vietnam’s banana exports continue to perform strongly, growing by 10–15% annually and expected to reach USD 25 million this year. However, officials and farmers recognize the risks of relying on limited markets and are pursuing diversification to secure long-term growth.
The forum also discussed improving sustainability and market access, including collaboration with Australia’s ACIAR to meet premium export standards and entry into the global halal market, valued at USD 200 billion. The government is drafting a halal export development plan through 2030, with long-term goals extending to 2045.
