A ceremony on October 9 marked the official export of Vietnamese pomelos to Australia and Australian blueberries to Vietnam, symbolizing strengthened agricultural and trade ties. Pomelo has become the eighth Vietnamese fruit approved for the Australian market, joining mango, dragon fruit, longan, rambutan, lychee, star apple, and passion fruit. Similarly, blueberries are now the eighth Australian fruit cleared for export to Vietnam.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung said the exchange reflects the trusted, mutually beneficial cooperation between both countries and aligns with their commitment to sustainable development and farmer welfare.
The Vietnamese Plant Production and Protection Department will collaborate with local agencies to ensure compliance with Australia’s strict phytosanitary and food safety requirements, including the certification of approved growing areas and packing facilities.
Vietnam is the world’s second-largest pomelo producer, cultivating about 110,000 hectares and producing over 1.2 million tons annually, primarily in the Mekong Delta, Red River Delta, and northern mountainous regions. Vietnamese pomelos are now exported to 14 markets, including the US, South Korea, and New Zealand, earning around USD 60 million in 2024. The new export arrangement is expected to further enhance market access and establish a sustainable two-way fruit supply chain between Vietnam and Australia.
