Kenya, New Zealand emerge as key actors in China's growing avocado market

November 18, 2025 | Fresh Fruit Portal |

Between 2012 and 2023, China’s fresh avocado imports grew rapidly, making the country a major global buyer. However, imports dropped by nearly 25 percent in 2024, prompting price adjustments and more cautious consumer demand. Avocado consumption in China continues to rise—driven by young consumers and a preference for healthy, easy-to-prepare foods—but domestic production remains limited, keeping China dependent on imports.

China now imports avocados from nine countries. Peru is the top supplier, shipping 37,737 tons in 2024, supported by expanded cultivation, efficient irrigation, and improved logistics, including shorter shipping times through the Port of Chancay. Promotional campaigns in major Chinese cities have also boosted demand. However, Peru’s 2024 shipments still dipped due to earlier climate-related production issues.

Chile, once a key supplier, has sharply reduced exports to China because of drought and a shift toward other markets. Kenya has quickly grown into China’s third-largest supplier since 2022, benefiting from year-round production and strong export capacity. New Zealand is also expanding, offering high-quality Hass avocados with two yearly harvests.

Mexico, historically China’s first supplier, has seen its share decline due to long transport distances and higher loss rates, reducing its competitiveness against closer, more efficient exporters.
